Okay, it's just preseason so far.
The Bucs opened their preseason at home with a suitably humdrum 16-3 victory over the New York Jets. The Bucs rushed for over 150 yards, picking up 3-5 yards per attempt on a fairly consistent basis. Rookies Jeremy Trueblood and Davin Joseph started at left tackle and left guard, respectively. Both performed well, though Joseph was whistled for a 15-yard facemask penalty in the first quarter.
The two most notable performances were by substitutes Carey Davis, who wasn't expected to play at tailback yet gained 67 yards on 14 carries with some nifty running, and Bruce Gradkowski, who in between handoffs on successful running plays completed 11 of 13 passes for 104 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The sole blemishes on Gradkowski's performance were a pass thrown behind the receiver and a pass over the middle that bounced off the hands of a somewhat surprised Jet linebacker.
There was nothing in his performance thus far to temper my prediction about Gradkowski being the steal of the draft this past year.
The play of the whole team was pretty solid. There were a few breakdowns in the secondary--which is normal in the NFL, and Michael Pittman fumbled the ball a couple of times.
Overall, a satisfactory effort for the first preseason game.
